Jean Barraque’s Piano Sonata (1952), Winston Choi (piano)

The critic Andre Hodeir, a friend and champion of Barraque’s music, memorably described the Piano Sonata, 1952: “The Orphean work par excellence, inviting the listener on a journey to the Underworld from which there is no return. Here, for perhaps the first time in history, Music comes face to face with her archenemy, Silence. The finale attains a summit of agonizing grandeur; the relentless process is now coming to an end, and music cracks under the inhuman strain, disintegrates, and is sucked into the void.” Choi has performed in recital and with orchestra across 4 continents. He has collaborated with composers including William Bolcom, Elliott Carter, Brian Ferneyhough, Bernard Rands, Sven-David Sandstrom, Bright Sheng, Christian Wolff, Chen Yi and John Zorn.

This concert has received generous support from the France Chicago Center.
